  1. Art Contest

    The Huntsville Public Library Friends’ Art Contest will be held during Summer 2019. This year’s theme is “Heroes and Villains.” The contest is open for all five through 18 year olds and fifteen winners will be selected. Correctly filled out submission forms are required to be eligible as is artwork that adheres to the submission guidelines. The deadline to submit your artwork is Monday, August 12. Winners will be announced in September.

    Get fit while you sit with Sittercise! It’s an exercise program offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Huntsville Public Library in conjunction with Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Sittercise is designed to help those who are aging and/or dealing with chronic and other illnesses. It focuses on strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and overall improved function. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor. The class is free and open to adults ages 18 and older.

    With just a few clicks, you can learn how to animate! Whether it’s making a character dance or talk, you can make a character come to life in endless ways by learning the basics of computer science with animation. Come to “Animate a Name,” a fun, first introduction to animation for ages 5 to 10 years from 11 to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays in June in the Nash Board Room at the Huntsville Public Library. Participants will learn events, sequencing, loops, and more!. Space is limited and registration is required for this FREE event. This class requires no previous coding or animation experience and is designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics of computer science. Participants are welcome to bring their own laptop or use a library laptop.

  4. Genealogy Tips and Tricks

    When researching your family tree, there are several tips and tricks that can save you time and trouble. Come to the Huntsville Public Library from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23 to find out more. Walker County Genealogical Society member Emmy Bushman will share some secrets that will help you with your research. Future meetings will be May 21 and June 18 in the Huntsville Public Library’s Dickenson Genealogy Room. Registration is required. The sessions are sponsored by the Walker County Genealogical Society.     Appreciate the beauty of nature at “All About Butterflies” with the Houston Museum of Natural Science presentation at the Huntsville Public Library. Learn about metamorphosis and more in this interactive program with caterpillars and butterflies. Join us on Wednesday, June 19 in the Staggs Community Room. The Houston Museum will present six 30 minute presentations for up to 30 children and their accompanying adults per session. The sessions will be held at 1 p.m. and will end at 4 p.m. This program is best suited for ages 2 and up.

One-hour sessions will be offered weekly on Thursdays. Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Attendance will be limited to no more than four researchers. The small group will allow each participant to receive individual attention. Sign-up is not required. This program is for adults 17 and older.

    The Texas Poison Center Network will be at the Huntsville Public Library at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 for an informative presentation on the venomous snakes of Texas. The workshop will be held on the first Friday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Develop the skill sets needed for online genealogical research. Learn how to navigate the different learning centers and databases. Discover family tree members using Ancestry.com tools such as vital, census, military, and immigration records. The site is free to library patrons when used on the library’s computers. Limit 4 per session.
