  1. Free Adult Literacy Tutoring

    Free walk-in tutoring sessions are available at the Huntsville Public Library for adults (18+ years old). This tutoring program helps with English reading, writing, and speaking skills and preparation for the GED® (high school equivalency test). Walk-in tutoring sessions are on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment required for sessions Monday through Friday. Saturday by appointment only.

  2. Sittercise

    Get fit while you sit with Sittercise! It’s an exercise program offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Huntsville Public Library in conjunction with Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Sittercise is designed to help those who are aging and/or dealing with chronic and other illnesses. It focuses on strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and overall improved function. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor. The class is free and open to adults ages 18 and older.

  3. Heart Healthy Habits

    February is traditionally the month for lovers and all things heart related. February reminds us to take care of our heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Huntsville Public Library is proudly participating in the American Heart Month to increase awareness of heart disease and its effects. Clinical Dietitian April Pickrel will speak about heart- healthy habits on Tuesday, February 11 at 11 a.m. in the Staggs Community Room. You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk: ? Watch your weight. ? Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke. ? Control your cholesterol and blood pressure. ? If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation. ? Get active and eat healthy.

  4. Intermediate computer classes

    Boost your computer knowledge with the free Intermediate Computer Classes hosted by the Huntsville Public Library! Classes will be held from 11 to 12 p.m. Tuesdays in February. These hour-long classes will feature how to create and save files, move files into folders, delete file types, and download files and programs. Class size is limited, and registration is required. A library card is needed to participate in the classes. If you don’t have a card, bring your ID. Adults 17 and older can register for classes.

  5. Intensive Mandarin

    Join a FREE intensive Mandarin Chinese class from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays from February 4 to April 28 at the Huntsville Public Library. Students will learn how to speak, write, and read this language. Instructor is a native speaker from Nanging, China.

  6. Let’s Discuss Your Genealogy Problem

    Beginning February 4, “Let’s Discuss Your Genealogy Problem” will be meeting each Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. in February in the Huntsville Public Library’s Dickenson Genealogy Room to seek a group solution to your specific problem. Registration is required. The sessions will be led by Johnnie Jo Dickenson and are sponsored by the Walker County Genealogical Society. Meetings will be held on February 11, 18, and 25.

  7. Story Time

    Story Time is a fun early literacy program for kids 5 and under at the Huntsville Public Library. Join us for interactive stories, songs, rhymes, and crafts three times a week in the Staggs Community Room. The early literacy practices featured each week help build the foundation for a lifelong love of reading and learning. Story Time offers caregivers and parents an opportunity to experience early literacy practices in action, discover great books and resources for home use, and socialize with other parents after Story Time. There is something new each week! Sign-up is not required. Story Time is held on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday mornings, and Friday mornings.

    This will give an opportunity for those who have some experience in clay to have access to a ceramics studio equipped with pottery making tools and equipment, glazes, and firing. We have 2 wheels available for use, or you can just hand build.
