The Huntsville Police Department was alerted to a 2-month-old child that had been gravely injured on Sunday, May 12. The initial investigation indicated that the child had suffered severe brain trauma according to medical professionals, allegedly cause by being violently and repeatedly shaken.
HPD’s investigation led to the child’s father, Kenneth Benard Bay, as a primary suspect. Following a thorough investigation, Bay was arrested and charged with Injury to a Child and transported to the Walker County Jail, with bond set at $20,000 by Justice of the Peace Holt. Injury to a Child is a First-Degree Felony and is punishable by imprisonment in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for a term ranging from 5 years to 99 years and a possible fine not to exceed $10,000.
“I would like to thank all those that have worked on this investigation – my detectives, Texas Children’s Hospital staff, and the Texas DPS Polygraph Services,” Huntsville Police Chief Kevin Lunsford said. “These types of investigations can be very trying and emotional for all involved. As a whole, everyone worked very hard to bring the investigation to this point.”
The child is currently being cared for in the Intensive Care Unit of Texas Children’s Hospital in stable condition. No further information about the child is being released at this time.
